The Nidstang Page

The Scandinavian word nithing (or niding) is inherently more offensive than the N word even though it has nothing to do with race or ethincity. The N word, which is simply a variant of the Latin word for "Black," is offensive only because racists turned it into a pejorative and used it in a context that now makes it offensive in polite society.

The Latin root of the N word is niger (black) but the Scandinavian root of nithing (nith or nid) means evil and malice. The serpent who gnaws at the root of the World Ash Tree (the structure that upholds and supports the Universe) is known as Nidhogg or "Malice Striker." A nithing is a subhuman enemy of Civilization, a hostis humani generis (enemy of all Mankind) who deserves to be shunned and ostracized by all civilized human beings; in medieval times, a nithing was often proclaimed outlaw (outside the law's protection) which meant in fact that anybody was free to kill him and was encouraged to do so. The accusation of "nithing" was in fact so offensive that the person so insulted had to fight a duel (holmgang) with his accuser.

"If someone speaks insults to another man (”You’re not the like of a man, and not a man in your chest!” – ”I’m a man like you!”), they shall meet where three roads meet. If he who has spoken comes and not the insulted one, then he shall be as he's been called: no right to swear oaths, no right to bear witness, may it concern man or woman.

If the insulted one comes and not he who has spoken, then he shall cry ”Niðingr!” ["Villain!" or "Nithing!"] three times and make a mark in the ground, and he is worse who spoke what he dared not keep.

Now both meet fully armed: if the insulted one falls, the compensation is half a weregild [man-price]; if he who has spoken falls, insults are the worst, the tongue the head’s bane, he shall lie in a field of no compensation."

The term nithing is reserved not for political opponents or those with whom we merely disagree, but for those whose conduct is so outrageous--e.g. terrorists or enablers of terroristic violence against innocent people--that they deserve to be shunned and ostracized every bit as thoroughly as active child molesters.

As an example, we proclaim that Fred Phelps and his daughters Shirley Phelps-Roper and Rebekah Phelps-Davis of the Westboro Baptist Church are nithings because of the Westboro Baptist Church's offensive picketing of the funerals of dead American Soldiers. A court has ruled that this is freedom of speech but we contend that the same freedom of speech would then allow the soldier's bereaved family or others to, for example, send Shirley Phelps-Roper and Rebekah Phelps-Davis condolance cards (upon their father's death--he was born in 1929 so Hell should call him home within the next decade) that say something to the effect that they are glad that Fred Phelps and the Devil can now sodomize each other for all eternity. If Shirley Phelps-Roper or Rebekah Phelps-Davis invades a soldier's funeral, the C word should be used as liberally as possible. The idea is not merely to hurl insults but to make the Phelps family feel every bit as violated as the dead soldier's family feels when these bipedal pieces of excrement invade the funerals of their loved ones. And it is the Phelps family itself that got a court to set the precedent that conduct of this nature is within the bounds of the First Amendment.
