Understanding the Basic Problem in the Mideast

Root Cause of the conflict

George Will, "America must preempt next level of terrorism."

In 1967, on the eve of the Six-Day War, Egypt's President Nasser proclaimed: "We are confronting Israel and the West as well." Netanyahu says: "The soldiers of militant Islam and Pan-Arabism do not hate the West because of Israel; they hate Israel because of the West." They hate "Zionism as an expression and representation of Western civilization." And they hate America because it is the purest expression of modernity--- individualism, pluralism, freedom, secularism.

The Arabs and Palestinians like to point to recent United Nations resolutions but, if they had listened to the UN in 1948, there wouldn't be any problems today. From the Jewish Virtual Library,
Violence in the Holy Land broke out almost immediately after the UN announced partition on November 29, 1947. Jamal Husseini, the Arab Higher Committee's spokesman, had told the UN prior to the partition vote [dividing the region between Arabs and Jews] the Arabs would drench "the soil of our beloved country with the last drop of our blood . . . ." (J.C. Hurewitz, The Struggle For Palestine, (NY: Shocken Books, 1976), p. 308.)

Five Arab armies (Egypt, Syria, Transjordan, Lebanon and Iraq) immediately invaded Israel. Their intentions were declared by Azzam Pasha, Secretary-General of the Arab League: "This will be a war of extermination and a momentous massacre which will be spoken of like the Mongolian massacres and the Crusades." (Isi Leibler, The Case For Israel, (Australia: The Globe Press, 1972), p. 15.)

From Palmer, R.R., and Colton, Joel. 1971, A History of the Modern World. New York: Alfred A. Knopf. Pages 957-960
[In 1948, after the United Nations partition of Palestine] The Zionist leaders thereupon proclaimed the Republic of Israel and took up arms against sizeable invading Arab armies, which they succeeded in defeating quickly. In setting up the Israeli state almost 1,000,000 Arabs were dispossessed and remained disgruntled; Israeli offers to relocate the refugees were spurned.
The "dispossession" resulted from the fact that, instead of overrunning Israel and throwing the Jews into the sea as planned, the Arabs actually lost land. The map on page 959 of the reference shows that the U.N. partition gave Israel two discontinuous pieces of land. The bottom line is that the Arabs refused to live in peace, they started something they couldn't finish, and they had their backsides handed to them. It's a tale common to many schoolyard bullies ("Waaahhhh! He hit me back!") and criminals like rapists ("I wouldn't have cut the b***h if she hadn't resisted, Your Honor") and armed robbers ("I wouldn't have shot him if he'd handed over his money, Your Honor") as well as aggressor nations.

Note that the Arabs also started the 1956, 1967, and 1973 wars, the latter by a surprise attack on Yom Kippur, Israel's most sacred religious holiday. A certain nation did something like that to the United States on a Sunday morning (that time being sacred to our mostly Christian population). We incinerated three of that country's cities, one (Tokyo) with firebombs and two (Hiroshima and Nagasaki) with nuclear weapons.

To imagine Israel's situation, consider the United States as being surrounded on three sides by far more populous nations that are semi-democratic (Egypt), monarchies (Jordan) and dictatorships (Syria)-- a couple of billion people to put things in perspective. They have started several wars of aggression against the United States, with the stated goal of exterminating Americans and driving us into the sea. There is another population (Palestinians) in close proximity and their militants are carrying out the equivalent of an Oklahoma City bombing every couple of weeks. We can imagine that the neighboring countries would have been radioactive slag after the first couple of times they invaded the United States, or even after the first time. Their leaders would, like Imperial Japan's Hideki Tojo, have been dancing the Newgate Hornpipe at the ends of ropes. The Arabs (Egypt and Syria especially) have really gotten off very lightly.

Some fact to consider.

Zionism came into existence as a need to erect a safe harbor for Jews anywhere who need a place to escape to because of a specific racism called antisemitism. Any Jew can become a citizen of Israel but this doesn¹t exclude any other. Fully 20% of Israel's citizens are in fact Arabs. They vote, are elected. Just last month a Druse military man attained the upper echelon of the IDF (Druse¹s are Arabs who practice an offshoott of Islam). Just recently they rebuffed Jumblat the leader of the Lebanese Druse when he asked them not to serve in the IDF in a Druse conference. Israeli Druse told him not to interfere with Israel's Druse's because it is none of his business.

Israel went out of its way to take in Vietnamese boat people while everybody was scrambling fast not to take in any of those poor people.

Israel went at great risk and great effort to save African Jews of Ethiopia while nobody to this day made an effort to get Africans from their own religion out of places of trouble.

Israel took in Bosnian Muslim refugees during the Bosnian war.

Ever since 1967 all religions can worship unmolested in Israel because they are protected by law. An innovation to say the least in the middle east.

Now consider what happens in Arab lands as a contrast.

Berbers are being massacred in Algeria (They are the original inhabitants of north Africa)

Christians and Animist's in Sudan are being massacred, raped , enslaved for refusing to follow Shaaria (Islamic law)

In Egypt Copts are being attacked constantly. Murders, rapes are daily occurrences (The Coptic church is one of the oldest Christian churches certainly long before the Arab invasion of Egypt)

Christians of Iraq are escaping continually the Arab paradise of Saddam, (The Chaldeans still use Aramaic in their churches the same language used at the time of Jesus and the language of the Talmud. Soon most will be in San Diego and Chicago and not in their home land, Iraq)

Maronites leave Lebanon in droves chased by the Syrian occupier because many are lingering in Syrian jails while tortured daily. (Maronites are one of the oldest churches. They regard themselves as direct descendants of the Phoenicians)

You can't have a church in Saudi Arabia and can be flogged in public for conducting a Christian service.

Jews are virtually gone from all Arab lands because they escaped to Israel. More than half the population of Israel originated as refugees from Arab lands and Iran.

Jews and Christians were always called "Dhimies" in Islamic lands. (second class citizens who paid extra tax for not being part of Islam and with virtually no protection from molestation by fanatics)

"Aabed" in Arabic denotes Africans to this day. The word in Arabic means exactly what it is meant: SLAVE!

Yet Arabs have the hutzpah to call Zionism racism!

I made the effort of writing this so that none of you should fall to this horrible propaganda.

Creative Interpretations of the Holy Koran
"As for what a true martyr can expect, Chief Mufti of the Palestinian Authority Police, Sheik Abd Al-Salam Skheidm, spelled it out in 1999. "From the moment his first drop of blood spills, he feels no pain and he is absolved of all his sins; he sees his seat in heaven; he is spared the tortures of the grave; he is spared the horrors of the Day of Judgment; he is married to 70 black-eyed women; he can vouch for 70 of his family members to enter paradise; he earns the crown of glory, whose precious stone is worth all the world." (Mona Charen, "U.S. needs to recognize differences between Palestinian, Israeli responses.")

This is about as good as the racket the Church had going in the Middle Ages, where you could buy indulgences for your sins. You could pay money to the Church to buy your way out of hundreds or thousands of years in Purgatory (where your soul had to atone for its sins on Earth before it could go to Heaven). If you didn't think you had to worry about spending time in Purgatory yourself, you could buy indulgences for your dead friends and relatives!

Here's another one...

Devotion, desire drive youths to 'martyrdom' Palestinians in pursuit of paradise turn their own bodies into weapons
By Jack Kelley, USA TODAY

At any time, Israeli officials believe, Hamas has from five to 20 men, ages 18 to 23, awaiting orders to carry out suicide attacks. The group also claims to have ''tens of thousands'' of youths  ready to follow in their footsteps. ''We like to grow them,'' Yosef says. ''From kindergarten through college.''

In Hamas-run kindergartens, signs on the walls read: ''The children of the kindergarten are the shaheeds (holy martyrs) of tomorrow.''

... At an Islamic school in Gaza City run by Hamas, 11-year-old Palestinian student Ahmed's small frame and boyish smile are deceiving. They mask a determination to kill at any cost. ''I will make my body a bomb that will blast the flesh of Zionists, the sons of pigs and monkeys,'' Ahmed says.

... ''Allahu Akbar,'' his classmates shout in response: ''God is great.''

''May the virgins give you pleasure,'' his teacher yells, referring to one of the rewards awaiting martyrs in paradise. Even the principal smiles and nods his approval.

Attention, Israel: why don't you drop leaflets on this school that ask why, if all those virgins are awaiting the shaheeds, the teacher and the principal don't go out and martyr themselves?  They are to Islam what the Spanish Inquisition was to Christianity.

Why the Palestinian Liberation Organization consists of war criminals

The Hague Convention on PLO terrorists who dress as civilians
The Qualifications of Belligerents

Article 1. The laws, rights, and duties of war apply not only to armies, but also to militia and volunteer corps fulfilling the following conditions:
1. To be commanded by a person responsible for his subordinates;
2. To have a fixed distinctive emblem recognizable at a distance;
3. To carry arms openly; and
4. To conduct their operations in accordance with the laws and customs of war.

The Geneva Convention on PLO terrorists who fire from among civilians

The presence or movements of the civilian population or individual civilians shall not be used to render certain points or areas immune from military operations, in particular in attempts to shield military objectives from attacks or to shield, favor or impede military operations. The Parties to the conflict shall not direct the movement of the civilian population or individual civilians in order to attempt to shield military objectives from attacks or to shield military operations.

Answer to quiz:

  1. The terrorist does not have any uniform or "fixed distinctive emblem recognizable at a distance." Except for his weapon, there is nothing to distinguish him from the innocent noncombatants around him.
  2. The terrorist is committing a war crime by firing on Israeli civilians. (Not "conducting his operations in accordance with the laws and customs of war.")
  3. The terrorist is using the civilian population to render himself (a military objective) immune to attack.
Also note that if he uses a concealed bomb (e.g. a suicide bomber) instead of the assault rifle that is shown (it can't be concealed easily), he is not "carrying arms openly."

The Geneva Convention on the PLO's practice of recruiting young teenagers to attack the Israelis

The Parties to the conflict shall take all feasible measures in order that children who have not attained the age of fifteen years do not take a direct part in hostilities and, in particular, they shall refrain from recruiting them into their armed forces.

My newspaper column on this subject

A recent item in the Wall Street Journal said that the UN had condemned Israeli air attacks on PLO terrorists. The UN remains silent when PLO terrorists kill Israeli women and children; it is obvious where the UN stands.
