Polish jokes they'll like in Warsaw (see picture at right). Court jester (late 1683, seeing the Sultan in a bad mood): "How many Poles does it take..." Defenders of Western Civilization "Iron Men with Eagle's Wings" Poser 5 rendition of a 17th century Polish Hussar, as led by King Jan Sobieski against the militant "Islamic" hordes at Vienna, 1683. The lance (kopia) is, per some Polish history sites, actually longer than depicted; it was designed to outreach infantry pikes. The kopia was hollow to reduce its weight (noting that most of a cylinder's strength comes from its outer section). The leopard fur was a distinguishing part of the uniform of the Husaria. The wings served two apparent functions; they prevented lariat-wielding steppe horsemen from lassoing the Hussar, and they may have created a whistling noise that frightened enemy horses. Q: Why can the slowest Turkish Spahi ride faster than the fastest Polish Hussar? A: The ones that couldn't are dead! Q: What two things do you need to avoid losing a single man in a battle with the Poles? A: Fast horses and a good head start. The hero dies defending the fortress of Kamenets but the epilogue shows the Turks getting what they deserve at Chocim (1673).
